Organic Waste to Energy is a film of a waste-to-energy plant by James Wright with Six Degrees Architects and WOWOWA.

As a case study, Fitzroy Swimming Pool would be the first of 150 anaerobic digestors to be rolled out across Melbourne to deal with the city’s expanding food waste problem. This project combines a waste to energy plant with sauna and wellness centre to rebrand the concept of waste. The amalgamation of waste management and recreation centres would set a new precedent for other facilities across Melbourne.  Visitors to the pool would be able to drop their food waste into the digestor to produce fertiliser and biogas to heat the public pool, sauna and wellness centre.

Six Degrees
The Queen Victoria Market proposal looks to take the significant organic waste generated at the market and turn it into energy, for use by both the market and visitors to the precinct. Gas generated through the use of an anaerobic digester will provide energy to power a moonlight cinema for Melbourne City Council’s proposed new public space on the existing market carpark. The methane will also be used by the market’s fleet of forklifts and piped through the market to provide gas for the food outlets.

This event is part of A New Normal, a project led by Finding Infinity that challenges Melbourne to become an entirely self-sufficient city. This is explored through a series of installations and talks by Melbourne’s leading architects and designers in a former office building at 130 Collins Street.
