UMANA, meaning human, is a project expressing how coming together as one human race to make socially and environmentally sustainable choices today, will improve the quality of life tomorrow. Highlighting the intersectionality of social, sustainable and ethical human behaviour within fashion, this project expresses how fashion can have a positive effect on the future of our climate and social well-being. This project brings together a community of artists to produce a short film showcasing ethical, sustainable and socially conscious fashion designers from Melbourne who are giving life to a new world of conscious fashion and contributing to a better future. The film will be exclusively screened at the live exhibition event on Friday March 26th at Big Plans Space Melbourne, along with a live runway and performance.

Beade
Beade is a design studio started by Bayley Eade through her Honours project, Bayley works by utilising fabrication and textile that is already available and in circulation, minimising her impact as a designer and being as conscious as she can in all aspects of design and her life. Bayley used personal nostalgia, her relationship to Australian culture and a constant reflection and re-evaluation process on herself and her work to create her most recent collection. Created using repurposed fabric and off cuts each Garment is unique to itself but has the ability to be reproduced finding a balance between craft and fashion design.
HoMie
HoMie started out of curiosity in 2015, between 3 friends eager to break down the stigma associated with homelessness and those experiencing it rough on the streets. We are an organisation that supports young people affected by homelessness or hardship to equip them with skills, confidence and experiences to be more work-ready and better prepared for their future. We are gender neutral, we are socially conscious and we are a community.
Narissara
Founded in 2019, Narissara is an independent fashion label that is the result of a harmonious marriage between two cultures. Produced both in Thailand and Australia, all of our pieces are a mix between two distinct customs that accentuates bold femininity that embodies both strength and kindness. We believe in slow fashion, and Narissara has been focusing on sustainability and how we can shift our brand into becoming more conscious. We’re constantly sourcing eco-friendly fabrics and ways to minimise our carbon footprint. With limited stocks and made- to-order pieces, each order is created from scratch, thus lowering the amount of waste in materials and excess stock. Plus, our packaging is 100% recyclable.
Skini Dip Swimwear
Born from an obsession to feel confident in ones own skin, SkiniDip tells an internal love story between the founder and her consideration of ones self. She invites you into her world of treating yourself as a goddess; it’s narcissistic, indulgent and seductive. SkïniDip is an ethically and sustainably minded swimwear and après swim label whose ethos is to get you comfortable in your own skin. Contrasting experimental designs with refined silhouettes, our pieces are designed to accentuate a woman’s body and liberate from socially constructed ideals of beauty. Using Repreve swimwear fabric that is made from recycled plastic bottles, each piece is handmade to order to reduce waste and promote a new way of retail consumption. Furthermore, our packaging is 100% compostable and reusable.
YOUR(FRËÀK)GURL
YOUR(FRËÀK)GURL is a handmade, Melbourne based label that celebrates individualism and sexuality. It is a hybrid of performative and festive fashion that interrelates with vibrant streetwear. Shone through lust for saturated colour, sexually liberating graphics and humorous hand embroidered characters, YOUR(FRËÀK)GURL will always stand out in a crowd and be remembered.
And.Bear
AND.BEAR is a contemporary handmade fashion label created by Isabella Demartini and Georgie Allen. We pride ourselves on using natural and organic fibres and following the circular fashion movement. At AND.BEAR we base our minimal and simplistic designs on what is missing from our own wardrobes, using feminine silhouettes while also not forgetting about all our men out there with the AND.BEAR streetwear collections. AND.BEAR’s name came from Georgie’s gorgeous Dalmatian ‘Bear’, who was so full of personality and was our star model in our first photoshoot. He instantly became our muse and inspiration. Each AND.BEAR collection and piece is named after all the beautiful animals and people we love.
