A Sea at the Table Past Event
Bioplastics and algae are gathering exponential interest within contemporary design for their potential as a sustainable eco-material. As the planet faces increasing challenges related to the human-driven climate crisis, this interest is timely. This exhibition explores the potential for algae as sustainable material through a collection of algae bioplastic tableware. Showcasing the potential of this medium for designing for a post-petrochemical world through creative solutions that do not harm our planet.
A Sea at the Table showcases a series of bespoke vessels created by Other Matter and made from algal polymer and a range of organic pigments including a selection of microalgaes encompassing of range of colours, transparencies and capacities. Other Matter and Fluff Corp. have also collaborated to make a number objects comprising of ceramic ‘body’ and algae ‘glaze’. All pieces are organic, compostable at home and able to be remade in a generative closed-loop system.
Unlike commonly used materials, these algae-based bioplastics developed can be recycled in a home kitchen in about an hour. The same ingredients can be used to make and re-make a number of different objects. The objects featured in this exhibiton reference both the literal act of consumption and the home. Geopolitical infrastructure presents infinite challenges to everyday people leading sustainable lifestyles. In the face of inaction at the top, this work proposes a bottom-up solution.
A series of demonstrations will happen over the duration of the show to reveal the process for making bioplastic. Stay tuned to the Facebook event and Other Matter’s instagram for updates on live happenings.
Other Matter
Other Matter is an experimental studio working with algae-based bioplastics founded by Jessie French. Through the design of materials, objects, experiences and futures, we invite others to engage with the possibilities of a post-petrochemical world.
