ALUMINate: Lights by MXC Project Past Event

Cosmic Light is an exceptional chandelier, with a composite architecture and a grandiose attitude. A solid steel structure, sustains and connects all its lighting fixtures. It consists of a major, round shaped, central hub, from which eight arms evenly spread out. The main central ring holds three cylinders, each of them with a different diameter, so that from the wider one, which is at the base, two thinner ones rise upwards. This impulse to ascend is counteracted by the eight horizontal arms, which hold smaller cylinders, equally proportioned and positioned. The most compelling trait of all cylinders is that they are entirely realised welding together thousands of discarded can tabs, to produce a texture, not only pleasing to the eye, but also able to interact with light. LED strips, in fact, are placed inside each cylinder and, precisely in order to perfect this light interaction, some polyurethane bands are inserted in crucial positions, guaranteeing a very soft, delicate light effect.

Supernova is a very captivating light fixture, composed of four concentric rings rotating around a central, vertical axe, which serves as a pendant. The rings are 50mm wide but only 5mm thin and they can pivot around themselves, originating symmetries, balanced proportion and rhythmic alternation of full and empty spaces. From spherical volumes to almost flat circular geometries, Supernova can adopt various shapes, allowing an always different interplay between shadows and light. A careful observation of the rings surface reveals the repurposed nature of the material used to realise them: can tabs. Thousands of them, woven together, become almost unrecognisable in their new, harmonious arrangement. To ensure their firmness, they are supported by flexible metal plates, which were obtained from industrial production scraps. Moreover, the ring external contour is sewed together with a black beeswax cotton thread. Total Pull Tabs used: 1536. E27 Lampholder.

The collection Lights in Space, delves into the infinity of outer space, imagining a celestial dimension capable of lighting up our dark worldly spaces. Constellations, galaxies, stars and comets are dropping down to earth from the obscurity of the universe and yet, as they shine, they are not made of stardust, but of aluminium pull tabs, round bases or rings, obtained from used cans. Lights in Space is a limited edition encompassing nine compelling pendant lightings, which are shaped to evoke those enchanting bright matters, revealing themselves in the sky only when it turns black. Each of these remarkable pieces allows us to get lost in the mysteries of the cosmos, while, at the same time, we are reminded how minuscule we are within this grandiose whole. In this orbit, thus, a simple aluminium can’s pull tab gains the power to remind us about respect and appreciation for the small stone which hosts us. It becomes an artistic palette, skilfully orchestrated to embody an action of care, which, however, does

Aluminate challenges the role of waste in our society through the exhibition of beautiful and elegant light fittings and furniture. Behind the charm of the pieces exhibited, there is a precise intuition that gives a second chance to discarded aluminium cans, transforming them into design modules. They become exquisite patterns that shape new, useful objects, where light and aluminium resonate together to shine on a more sustainable vision of the future.

Aluminate proposes to renegotiate the notion of disposable, touching upon one of the many issues related to climate change and our human entanglements with it.
