Safeness by Design: Urban Contexts Past Event

Presented by Professor Ian de Vere, A/Prof. Ross McLeod, Dr Malte Wagenfeld

An exhibition of design proposals resulting from collaborations between RMIT’s Safeness by Design initiative and the strategists and urban planners from the City of Melbourne and the Ajuntament de Barcelona (city council).

·   the Safe Mobility in Barcelona (2020-21) project which delivers innovative solutions to the safety and civic planning issues surrounding the use of e-scooters in Barcelona’s busy metropolis (including pedestrian and rider safety, helmet usage, docking infrastructure, education and rider behaviour change), and

·  the Safe City Smart City (2020) project with the City of Melbourne which delivers wide ranging design solutions that ensure a 24-hour city that is safe, inclusive and welcoming for all users, with a focus on the safety of women transiting the city at night.

· the Safe Mobility with Covid-19 (2020) project in collaboration with the cities of Melbourne and Barcelona which realises solutions for coronavirus impacted urban landscapes with a focus on safe solutions for public transport, personal mobility, sanitation and contact avoidance, smart city technologies, and local community mobility.

Professor Ian de Vere

Ian de Vere is an award-winning industrial designer with extensive industry experience in new product development and user-centred design, and an experienced design educator who is interested in the power of design to make a positive contribution to society.

Assoc. Professor Ross McLeod

As a designer, educator and academic, Ross sees his role as one that fosters a critical exploration of the issues informing contemporary design culture.

Dr Malte Wagenfeld

Malte Wagenfeld is an industrial designer, academic, researcher and artist whose explorative installations, designs and writings have been exhibited and published internationally.
