Megashift: Design as an evolution navigator Past Event
Tabor Robak on Megafauna
Megashift will provides us with an opportunity to investigate design’s new role as an evolution navigator. This conversation with artist Tabor Robak will explore the proactive influence design can have on humankind in a world driven by technological innovation, multi-sensory experiences and fuelled by artificial and swarm intelligence.
Megashift will expand on the digitally expressed, Darwinesque proposition of Tabor’s artwork Megafauna. The discussion will identify the ensuing evolutionary steps and then unpack their potential positive and/or negative implications for society.
As Isaac Asimov famously said, “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science fiction gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.” The discussion will draw on Tabor’s knowledge as an artist using and exploring the role of technology design as an artistic device and subject.
Tabor Robak
Tabor Robak, born 1986 in Portland, Oregon, is a New Media artist based in New York City. Since graduating in 2010 from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, he has participated in over 60 exhibitions worldwide, including seven solo shows in the US and Europe. His work Megafauna is featured in NGV Triennial 2020.
Prof. Tuba Kocaturk
Tuba Kocaturk is Professor of Integral Design at Deakin University, School of Architecture and Built Environment. She is the founding-director of the MInD (Mediated Intelligence in Design) Lab; a transdisciplinary and practice-based research group that operates at the intersection of Built Environment, Information Technology and Design Innovation. Her expertise centres upon the creative, generative and collaborative use of information and communication technologies and digital media in Built Environment and in Design.
Dr. Russell Kennedy
Dr Russell Kennedy is a Senior Lecturer in Screen and Design in the School of Communication and Creative Arts in Deakin University’s Faculty of Arts and Education. He is an academic and practitioner of both communication design and filmmaking. His research into protocols for respectful cross-cultural representation in design practice led to his co-authorship of the award winning Australian and International Indigenous Design Charters. Kennedy was President of ICoD, International Council of Design (2009-2011).

Pip Wallis, is Curator, Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria. Previously she was Managing Editor, X-TRA, Los Angeles; Curator in Residence, Chisenhale Gallery, London; and Curator, Gertrude Contemporary.
