Timeless Documents: Collaborative Catalogues Presenting Multiple Todays to Help Reinvent Tomorrow Past Event
Exhibitions are restricted by time, but the exhibition catalogue lives on; both as a piece of design and “time capsule” representing the social, political, personal and cultural concerns formed within an art exhibition. The exhibition catalogue reflects the concerns of yesterday and today, which inevitably reframe tomorrow.
CCP presents a community of creatives — designer, artist, writer, editor, curator — involved in producing a selection of catalogues from its 35-year history, alongside our upcoming catalogue for photographer Ruth Maddison, to talk to the production process and concerns of these “multiple todays” and how they are vital for thinking about tomorrow.
Rhys Gorgol
Rhys Gorgol is the principal and Creative Director of The Company You Keep, a branding and design practice based in Melbourne. Founding the practice with the vision that working with like-minded people produces better results, The Company You Keep set out to keep good company and help create great companies in the process. His work has a distinctly human quality that while militantly clear, resonates with warmth and wit.
Corey James
Corey James is a multi-disciplinary graphic designer specialising in editorial design, typography and visual identity. Prior to joining TCYK, he worked internationally in New York City and Beijing, collaborating with artists, designers, cultural institutions and commercial clients alike.
Joseph Johnson
Joseph Johnson is a Senior Designer at Studio Ongarato and a PhD candidate at RMIT University. From 2012 to 2016, he was the graphic designer at Centre for Contemporary Photography.
Ruth Maddison
Ruth Maddison is one of Australia’s foremost senior feminist photographers. Best known for her hand-coloured series, ‘Christmas Holidays with Bob’s Family, Mermaid Beach, Queensland (1977–78)’, Maddison has been for over 40 years, exploring ideas surrounding relationships, working lives and communities, through portraiture and social documentary photography.
Amelia Winata
Amelia Winata is an arts writer and critic based in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga). She is also a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Melbourne.
Sonia Leber
Sonia Leber is known for her distinctive artworks created in collaboration with David Chesworth. Their 2018 survey show at CCP ‘Architecture Makes Us: Cinematic Visions of Sonia Leber and David Chesworth’ featured six of their works, touring to UNSW Galleries, Sydney and Griffith University Art Museum, Brisbane. Sonia is a Senior Industry Fellow in the School of Art, RMIT University.
